About FOIL Yonkers

The process of getting information from local government can be tough. Despite state-regulated procedures and timelines, opaqueness and unwillingness throughought the system causes many citizens to forego seeking information at all.

The Freedom of Information Law (“FOIL”), Article 6 (Sections 84-90) of the NYS Public Officers Law, provides the public right to access to records maintained by government agencies with certain exceptions. “Record” means any information kept, held, filed, produced or reproduced by, with, or for this agency, in any physical form whatsoever including, but not limited to, reports, statements, examinations, memoranda, opinions, folders, files, books, manuals, pamphlets, forms, papers, designs, drawings, maps, photos, letters, microfilms, computer tapes or disks, rules, regulations or codes. Learn more about records access and Open FOIL NY.

FOIL Yonkers seeks to break down the barriers between the people and their government by crowd-sourcing not only the information delivered to the public, but the entire FOIL request process. Here, you can search for existing FOIL requests, track their progress, and download their attached documents. You can also submit new requests for our team to initiate on your behalf. By initiating a request, you are automatically subscribed to email updates as the request flows through the legally-mandated process.

This endeavor will not only make more freely-available publicly-owned information, but it also hopes to generate more interest in the process and spur more new requests. Help us build a more transparent and open Yonkers.
